90% Lenovo Yoga 9i (2023 Model) 14-inch Laptop Review

Last year the Lenovo Yoga 9i was one of my favorite laptops of the year and this years version brings with it some new improvements and once again is at the top of my list of laptops to get in 2023. One of the biggest improvements is going to be the screen. This year we have a 16:10 OLED screen which you can get in either a 2.8K (2880 x 1800) or 4K (3840 x 2400) option. This screen is simply amazing which is going to make working, watching media, etc so much more enjoyable. On top of that it is a touchscreen which can be used with the included Precision Pen 2. If you are someone who prefers to write things down instead of typing them you’ll definitely like using the Precision Pen 2. Beyond the screen you do have a new 13th gen processor (Core i7-1360P) as well as a faster PCI-Express solid state drive.

Last year the Lenovo Yoga 9i was one of my favorite laptops of the year and this years version brings with it some new improvements and once again is at the top of my list of laptops to get in 2023. At the time of publication, our review unit can be had for $1,650(USD) at Best Buy. Some consumers are going to overlook the Yoga 9I on price point alone, I was one of those consumers in years past. A well equipped gaming laptop can be had for the same price or less, that’ll feature a dedicated GPU, and most likely a high refresh rate screen with a more powerful CPU. A laptop for most people that would accomplish any task right? Until I experienced a purpose built laptop like the Lenovo Yoga 9I that’s built for productivity, light content creation, and media consumption I didn’t realize what a joy it would be to use. Well built, great screen, the 1080P webcam, solid trackpad and keyboard, not to mention the 360 degree hinge with pen, while it’s not the perfect laptop, it checks all the boxes for being a productivity powerhouse and holds its own in other demanding tasks as well. The tradeoffs are more than worth it, the Lenovo Yoga 9I has become one of my favorite laptops of 2023.

The design and display of this laptop is second to none. Performance and battery life are also decent enough. Most importantly, Lenovo has packed this with innovative features to boost productivity. It’s priced at NPR 230,000 in Nepal, some INR 162,355 in India, and USD 1,499 elsewhere. While this is not an affordable price by any means, it’s hard to think of a better alternative at that price point, so there’s that. So this was all about my review of the Lenovo Yoga 9i. The Lenovo Yoga 9i is for business travellers who need some oomph to finish off presentations, creators who use video and photo editing software, and artists. On sale for $2,200, it’s a bargain for a laptop with this amount of power, and thus an easy recommendation. But at the full price of $3,479, it’s definitely out of reach (and overkill) for more casual users who would be better suited to the Yoga 7i or another, cheaper solution. The Yoga 9i is one of the nicer 2-in-1 laptops I’ve reviewed, certainly the best I’ve seen this year. If I were shopping for a new non-gaming Windows laptop, this would be the one I would go for, given how easily it travels while still being able to do everything I need it to.

I am happy to report that the webcam in the Yoga 9i is also pretty good. It's 2.1 MP, with a 16:9 view, giving you 1080p video capture. It's not 5-MP quality like you'll find in some recent machines, but it's the best webcam I've tested on a laptop this year. The Yoga 9i has a 75 watt-hour battery, which boasts the same Rapid Charge Boost feature found in other recent Lenovos, like the Slim Pro 7 (8/10, WIRED Recommends). I managed 11 hours and 17 minutes in our standard battery test, which loops a 1080p film (local) with the brightness at 75 percent. In more realistic testing, like just using it for work for a few weeks, I was able to regularly get 12 hours, sometimes more so long as I kept the brightness dialed back a bit.

For creatives who constantly get their ideas out on virtual paper, students who like taking digital notes, and anyone who likes to kick back at the end of the day and watch movies, the Yoga 9i will blow you away. But, its limited power consumption keeps it from being a machine for everyone. If you’re looking for something that’s suited for gaming, 3D modeling, or software development, the Yoga 9i’s Intel Core i7-1360P processor won’t be able to keep up. The Asus ROG Flow Z13 is the closest alternative, but its tablet form factor and the subpar battery life might be too much of a drawback for those on the go. However, if you’re more concerned about the Yoga 9i’s high sticker price, the HP Envy 15 makes for a great alternative that’s well under a thousand dollars. But as an everyday, all-purpose laptop, the Yoga 9i has more than enough power to keep up with Photoshop and Evernote, and its display is best-in-class, with excellent color coverage and a fantastic touch sensitivity that makes drawing and writing feel as good as writing on paper. Lenovo’s Yoga 9i is an exemplary addition to the convertible laptop market.

We had a hunch that the Lenovo Yoga 9i Gen 8 would be a great-performing laptop after perusing its specs, but we were still pleasantly surprised oveall. As you can see from our testing, it beat out most of the competition in its class in most of benchmarks we ran it through. In day to day use, it was easily able to handle mainstream computing tasks and image editing workloads with aplomb, while offering good battery life. Intel's Core i7-1360P processor really shines here, ensuring the Yoga 9i excelled at every task we threw at it, save for perhaps heavier gaming workloads. Add in its premium presentation and a stunning 4K OLED touch display, and you have a winner. This laptop isn't perfect and its battery life with that high-end display option, while good, wasn't among the best out there, but in most other metrics, the new Lenovo Yoga 9i Gen 8 offers a very compelling 14-inch premium laptop experience. Of course, there is some serious competition here too. The Dell XPS 13 Plus immediately jumps to mind. Despite its non-convertible design, there's a lot to like about the XPS 13 Plus, especially if you like Dell's recent design language, with its invisible trackpad. Regardless, if you're in the market for a thin-and-light laptop, the Lenovo Yoga 9i Gen 8 is among a new breed of PC laptop PC offerings that's hard to beat. It's not cheap at $1,530 as tested, but with its included pen stylus support, a gorgeous 4K display, 360-degree hinge and a 100 Watt fast charger, there's a fair amount of features and functionality on offer here, and it does drop in just below Samsung's new Galaxy Book3 Pro 360 as well. With its combination of features, capability and build quality, the new Lenovo Yogi 9i Gen 8 is easy to recommend.

Once again, the Yoga 9 proves to be a fantastic laptop for your money. Indeed, it comes at a premium, but it offers more than one can digest. The features include a fingerprint reader, a Full HD Web camera with IR face recognition and privacy shutter, as well as a proximity sensor. This allows you to use the zero-touch functions, which can be enabled through the Vantage app. By the way, the same app will give you control over the performance of the notebook. With the highest available preset, you will be able to extract a fantastic desktop-grade level of performance from your convertible. The cooling is good enough, as it supports 64W and 28W power limits, respectively. There are a couple of things that we didn’t like about this machine. First – the memory. It is soldered to the motherboard, which leaves you no option to upgrade it in the future. Secondly – the port selection. Although you get two Thunderbolt 4 connectors and a fast USB Type-A port, we do miss the LAN port, HDMI connector, and SD card reader. Some business users might not like the fact that the laptop lacks WWAN support. On the other hand, the build quality of the device is simply fantastic, while the speakers are dynamic and loud. Not in the last place, you get a stylus inside the box. This will let you use the laptop to draw and take notes more easily. In our view, the Lenovo Yoga 9 (14″, 2023) is definitely worth it.

70% Lenovo Yoga 9i Gen 8 Review: Surprisingly Limited

All of this is to say that I don't think the Gen 8 is a bad laptop by any means. In fact, it has a spectacular display, really nice sound, and can handle games much better than my current workhorse. But I do think it's held back by its basic presentation. And particularly the way it tends to chew through battery power when doing anything more involved than streaming videos. I know I keep going back to my 2020 M1 MacBook Pro for a comparison but I feel like it's still apt here. Because this MacBook is three years old at this point, and despite the age difference the only edge I feel the Gen 8 really has over it is the gorgeous OLED screen — and make no mistake, it is gorgeous — and the fact that it can plan more process-heavy games better. To me, that might not be enough of an improvement to justify the price at $1700*, which amounts to an extra $300 to $400 over a three-year-old Apple product with comparable — maybe even slightly worse — battery life. Then again, the Gen 8 does include the Precision Pen 2 and can flip into tablet mode. So really it comes down to what you intend to use it for.

All of this is to say that I don't think the Gen 8 is a bad laptop by any means. In fact, it has a spectacular display, really nice sound, and can handle games much better than my current workhorse. But I do think it's held back by its basic presentation. And particularly the way it tends to chew through battery power when doing anything more involved than streaming videos. I know I keep going back to my 2020 M1 MacBook Pro for a comparison but I feel like it's still apt here. Because this MacBook is three years old at this point, and despite the age difference the only edge I feel the Gen 8 really has over it is the gorgeous OLED screen — and make no mistake, it is gorgeous — and the fact that it can plan more process-heavy games better. To me, that might not be enough of an improvement to justify the price at $1700*, which amounts to an extra $300 to $400 over a three-year-old Apple product with comparable — maybe even slightly worse — battery life. Then again, the Gen 8 does include the Precision Pen 2 and can flip into tablet mode. So really it comes down to what you intend to use it for.

With its $1,399 starting price tag it's priced to compete with laptops and 2-in-1s that don't look or sound half as nice, and the included stylus and carrying sleeve with every Yoga 9i is icing on the cake. However, the fact that Lenovo no longer builds a charging garage into this laptop limits the utility of the stylus and increases the odds of losing it. And as well-rounded and appealing as our Yoga 9i review unit is, it still falls short of the competition in some key ways. Most notably, the display is dimmer yet far more saturated than similarly-priced and similarly-sized competitors like the Acer Spin 5 and the Acer Swift 5. They both also outperform our Yoga 9i review unit in terms of both raw CPU power and video editing, despite being competitively priced and packing older CPUs than the 13th Gen Intel Core i7 in our review unit. They also both outlasted the Yoga 9i in our battery rundown test, as do many of the ultraportables we test these days. So if you want a beautiful Windows 2-in-1 with stylus included that will serve you equally well in class or in the conference room, the Lenovo Yoga 9i is one I heartily recommend — as long as you know the downsides as well as the benefits. If you want a laptop of this size specifically for gaming or video editing and don't mind it not turning into a tablet you'd probably be happier with the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14, a 14-inch gaming laptop that's competitively priced with the Yoga 9i. If you don't mind macOS, Apple's MacBook Pro 14-inch is more expensive than the Yoga 9i (and lacks its touchscreen or 2-in-1 versatility) but delivers far more power for photo and video editing, as well as a brighter and more color-accurate display.

I wish the touchpad was a bigger differentiator between the two lines. The Yoga 9i's touchpad is slightly larger, but both are mechanical touchpads and basically the same. At its price, the premium Yoga 9i 14 Gen 9 should have a haptic touchpad. With its lively response that's consistent across its entire surface and also customizable, the giant haptic touchpad was one of my favorite parts of the HP Spectre x360 14. With a fantastic OLED display and some of the best-sounding laptop speakers I've ever experienced packaged inside a trim, all-metal chassis, the Yoga 9i 14 Gen 9 delivers premium goods to account for its sky-high price.

Anytime you buy a laptop or any gadget really, you should start with a simple question: What do I want this for? Because not every laptop is for the same purpose. But laptops don’t have to be for gaming or work, sometimes they’re the thing we use to unwind and enjoy a good movie. That’s the Yoga 9i in a nutshell. Are you looking for something to serve as a music player, a movie watcher, and an internet browser that’s more powerful than an iPad but still capable of being used like a tablet?

There are areas where the Yoga 9i doesn’t excel. It’s performance is great across all mainstream apps, but nothing particularly special. It’s battery life is good, but a few hours short of stellar. Yet there’s something about the 2-in-1 design, the screen and the keyboard that makes this a great laptop for everyday use, both at home and on the go. It’s beautifully constructed and fabulous to look at, while being fast enough for anything except gaming and the most demanding creative tasks. I like the Yoga 9i Gen 9. A lot. It’s a gorgeous convertible 2-in-1 that’s very well made, and its OLED display and excellent audio make for a fun media experience. It’s also quite fast and reasonably portable. Its one significant flaw is below-average battery life. It also costs around $1,500, 50% more expensive than some other laptops with similar specs. Is a 2-in-1’s flexibility and a stunningly attractive chassis more important to you than all-day battery life? If so, then, by all means, buy the Yoga because only its battery life holds it back from a higher rating.

The Lenovo Yoga 9i (14″, Gen 9) is a well-tuned 2-in-1 laptop. Its good cooling with two fans allows decently high CPU clocks even when the Team Blue chip is loaded at max. In this scenario, the temperatures are also under control while the fan can be too noisy for some users. Still, if you don’t need the full power of the Meteor Lake processor, the “Intelligent Cooling” or the “Battery Saving” modes are the way to go if you want to hear less noise. We want to praise once again the Intel Arc (8-Cores) iGPU. When the latter is paired with fast RAM (like the soldered LPDDR5x-7467 MHz memory of this gadget) it can achieve some impressive scores for an integrated solution. For example, it can show 85 FPS in Dota 2 on High settings which could be overwhelming even for some low-end dedicated graphics.
