The Surface Pro X comes with an ARM-based processor and an integrated LTE modem, which is why it is an interesting device for those who appreciate portability. However, in everyday use, the combination of an ARM SoC and Windows 10 results in a lot of limitations, and the battery life is also quite poor.

While we applaud the Surface Pro X for its slick and refined, thin and light design, and comfy typing experience, the Surface Pro X is difficult to recommend for most people. It ends up being an ideal device for a very small group of users, thanks to the lack of a headphone jack and no support for a variety of apps.

Last year, when Microsoft launched the original Surface Pro X, the idea of a premium Arm-based PC was a fanciful one. There had been a handful of lower-cost models from HP, Asus and others, but they generally failed to impress. The Surface Pro X was a bold move to ditch the usual Intel (or AMD) chips and power a high-gloss, high-price two-in-one with a more smartphone-like processor. In that case it was the Microsoft SQ1, a collaboration between Microsoft and Qualcomm, based on the latter's Snapdragon chips.

After a day with this device, we were convinced that this is more of a tablet, that can behave as a laptop, than the other way around. Its ARM processor barely opens 64-bit programs, and the lack of genuine ports makes it less versatile. On the bright side, however, the Surface Pro X features an NVMe SSD drive, and its memory comes in two options – 8GB and 16GB of LPDDRx RAM.

The Microsoft Surface Pro X is an expensive tablet which seems to do what Apple did with its iPad Pro 2020 – add keyboard with touchpad support. It works flawlessly and delivers on most basic tasks you expect your Windows-based machine to do. But its expensive price tag (around Rs 1 lakh) makes it best suitable for enthusiasts wanting to experience the Windows future on the ARM processor, not the masses.

The Surface Pro X seemed at first like a slightly mad prospect; a Windows device that could only run certain apps felt far too close to the bad old days of Windows RT, and the spectre of compatibility issues looms large. However, this isn’t nearly as much of a problem in reality as we anticipated. Sure, there are some apps which aren’t available at all but, barring a few intermittent stability hiccups, our experience was untroubled by performance woes.

The Surface Pro X is a Windows 2-in-1 that's difficult to get your head around. So long as you're comfortable with its limitations, the only real sticking point is the price as you're going to need the keyboard and Surface Slim Pen as well as the tablet itself. But for many people, there's better value and fewer compatibility issues to be found elsewhere.

But as I said up top, the Surface Pro X’s success isn’t judged by traditional measures. I won’t recommend a $1,700 2-in-1 with limited compatibility to most people I know, but I can get behind a bold vision for a new Surface and an ARM-based future.

The overall performance of Surface X Pro is impressive, and a giant leap forward for the “always connected PC” and Qualcomm’s PC efforts. While there is more to be done, especially on the software front, Microsoft priced this Surface at the higher end of the spectrum. Once you spend the time with the machine, you can understand why they went for such pricing. The part that I find difficult to understand is why the storage option costs an ARM and leg, pardon the pun. Storage is not that expensive these days, yet Microsoft wants Apple margins for 256GB or, god forbid, 512GB of storage.

With the Surface Pro X, Microsoft has created a forward-thinking device that’s ahead of its time – but this isn't a good thing. While the Microsoft SQ1 ARM processor enables slightly improved battery life and facilitates the slimmer design, the device is hamstrung by consequential performance and compatibility issues. The Surface Pro X may well be what the future looks like for Surface devices and 2-in-1s across the board, but we're some way off right now.

The question that I hope Microsoft is asking itself is: What compelling reason has it given for customers to buy the Surface Pro X? Always-on connectivity? It’s not a unique argument, and one that Intel itself is gunning for. We haven’t tested Microsoft’s Surface Pro 7, but we’d assume that that’s its best tablet, not the Surface Pro X. With this tablet, we can’t see why Microsoft would use the term “Pro” at all.

After years of cookie-cutter upgrades, the Surface Pro X delivers a well-thought-out physical redesign. Again, however—and this is getting tiring by now—app compatibility, performance issues and bugs complicate Microsoft’s effort. Calling it an “Edgebook” isn’t quite right, because the Surface Pro X runs Office and other Microsoft apps well. But it still feels somewhat short of an actual PC.

The Surface Pro X might be my favorite PC that I've reviewed this year. It's actually the fifth Windows on ARM PC that I've reviewed out of the seven that have existed, so I'm used to the ins and outs of them. What I've always loved about them is that they're light and easy to carry, they're always connected to the internet, and they wake instantly.

I'll start with the good. The Surface Pro X nails three of the four main tenets of any good laptop: it has a gorgeous display; a premium, portable design; and long battery life. The fourth, performance, is a problem. ARM might be the future of computing but Microsoft jumped the gun with the SQ1, which offers middling performance on top of app-compatibility issues.

Fair enough, but asking people to pay $1,140 (including the keyboard case) for something that might not run all the apps they need is outrageous. Especially since Chromebooks are just as good at handling browser-based applications and generally cost $500 or less. If you're in the sliver of the population that needs access to a small handful of Windows apps, then maybe the Pro X is sufficient. But bear in mind you'll be paying a hefty premium for Windows, an LTE connection and gorgeous hardware.

You should never buy a gadget today based on the hope that the software will come tomorrow. That rule applies to the Surface Pro X more than usual because the investment is so large. For the near $1,800 you’d have to spend to get the Pro X model I reviewed, you would be able to buy a Surface Pro 7 kitted out with equivalent RAM, storage, keyboard, stylus, and an Intel Core i7 processor that would be loads faster and also be compatible with all Windows apps.

The Surface Pro X is undeniably a pleasant bit of kit to use, but having used one side by side with the Surface Pro 7, we're not sure the premium demanded by the slimmer chassis, larger screen and Qualcomm-inspired tech is worthwhile compared to its stablemate, particularly if ever called on for more intensive work.

The Surface Pro X is thinner and lighter than the Pro 7, and has a high-end consumer/pro styling that’s distinctly different from the older design’s more corporate feel. It has a slightly larger screen with a thinner bezel (13-inch vs the 7’s 12.3-inch) with a slightly higher resolution (2,880 x 1,920 vs 2,736 x 1,824). Asleep and without the keyboard, you’d probably mistake it for the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro – unless you spot the Surface Pro X’s additional USB-C port.

There’s a lot to like about the new Surface Pro X over the conventional Surface Pro devices. In fact, its starting price of US$999 is only a little more than the asking price of the Surface Pro 7 that starts from US$749. Having said that, the Surface Pro X is ideal if you’re looking for the most modern Surface device ever, intend to stay away from a power socket for extended hours and appreciate the instant-on, ever-ready traits of the Surface Pro X. The new Signature Keyboard and Slim Pen sound like excellent options to complement the Surface Pro X, but beware those will add to the base cost of the product. For a higher level of computing power, the Surface Pro 7 will be the better choice with more varied configuration options.

Microsoft’s Surface hardware launch yesterday saw an impressive range of devices launched that caters to a variety of modern work needs – two of which are still in the showcase stage (Surface Neo and Surface Duo) as they are engineering showcases to get developers onboard to take advantage of the new dual-screen devices along with Windows 10X. Since those are still a year away before consumers can purchase one, without a doubt, the most controversial and arguably the sexiest device that you can get your hands on soon is the Surface Pro X.

The Surface Pro X is a really interesting device, and proof that Microsoft isn't messing around when it comes to expanding its line of first-party hardware. Aside from looking like the kind of aesthetically and mechanically polished 2-in-1 that we've come to expect from Microsoft, it's also one of the first real outings for ARM-based Windows laptops. This means it's got a lot of proving to do, but it also makes it somewhat difficult to predict how it will perform under pressure.

Microsoft Surface Pro 7’s touchscreen display has an IPS panel with comfortable viewing angles, pretty high maximum brightness, good contrast levels, and adequate default settings. In addition to that, its backlight doesn’t use aggressive PWM for brightness adjustment. However, one of the biggest advantages it has is the wide color coverage and color accuracy. It is especially improved by our Gaming and Web design profile. Web designers and content creators will love it.

At $899 the Core i5 with 8 GB of memory and 128 GB of storage is extremely reasonable. The upcharge for more storage is more palatable when the performance is excellent like it is here. We really liked the Surface Pro 7's mix of looks, great display, light weight, and nice performance, so we're happy to give it our Recommended award.

The Pro 7 starts at $749, and that will get you a Core i3-1005G1, 4GB RAM, and a 128GB SSD. I wouldn't get that one, since the Core i3-1005G1 is a dual-core chip without Iris Plus Graphics. I'd recommend going for at least the model that Microsoft sent me, with a Core i5, 8GB RAM, and a 256GB SSD. It's actually $200 off right now for $999. You can check it out here.

We expected a bit more in advancements from the seventh Surface Pro tablet. USB-C is nice, but for a device at this price, its should be Thunderbolt 3. Plus, the display bezels are awfully thick for a tablet in 2019. The Surface Pro 7 isn’t big enough of a leap over the Pro 6 for us to recommend it to either upgraders or folks just getting into Microsoft’s tablet.

The Surface Pro 7 is another solid iteration of Microsoft's flagship Windows-tablet 2-in-1, elevated this time by worthy upgrades in the form of a USB-C port and peppy Ice Lake CPUs.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 7 feels more like a Surface Pro 6.5 than an actual new product. The only significant changes are the addition of a USB-C input and a move to Intel’s newer 10th-gen family of laptop CPUs. However, it remains a solid convertible and great choice for those looking for a flexible machine that works equally well as an office laptop as it does as a personal tablet.

The Surface Pro 7 delivers big on performance and display quality, complete with a responsive screen for note-taking and drawing and a convertible design that really shines with the excellent Type Cover keyboard. The introduction of USB-C is a much-needed change, and the Pro 7's design remains as travel-friendly as ever.

Microsoft's convertible remains the best option on the market for those who want the portability of a tablet combined with the convenience of a laptop. But the Surface Pro 7 does little to move the needle. The few new things it brings to the table -- USB-C and 10th Gen processors -- are certainly welcome but not enough to make the Surface Pro 7 a required upgrade if you already own the Surface Pro 6.

Microsoft Surface 8 Pro to sprzęt, z którym mam ogromny problem.

The Surface Pro 8 is easily the most fun Surface Pro made to date. This series was already a top contender for those after a tablet-laptop combo that can do serious work, but Intel’s Xe graphics makes it feel like a miniature game console. Yes, the “real” gamers may laugh at that idea, but imagine how hyped everyone would be if iPads could suddenly play games like Control and Skyrim, without simply streaming them over a network. It did cost a lot at launch, though. And it just won’t be suitable for some of you, with battery life that does not quite last a full day of work.

After a few months of the Surface Pro 8 sitting on a shelf, I have gone back to using it as my main device. I'm once again enjoying using multiple windows for multitasking, not having to worry about any extra workarounds, and I still have complete and total portability. So, iPad or Surface Pro 8? With so much uncertainty over the future of iPadOS, I'm no longer as confident as I was once about the future of Apple's high-end tablets. That said, Apple continues to make the best tablet-specific devices you can buy. If you're on the fence about whether to go with the Surface Pro 8 or an iPad Pro, I'll say this: you can't go wrong with either device, as long as you know what you're getting yourself into. The iPad Pro can do a lot of things, but only a few things really well. Whereas the Surface Pro 8 can do a lot of things really well, but it has its fair share of hiccups and gotchas as well. At the end of the day, however, you're getting a full computer in the Surface Pro 8 and, currently, 80% of one in the iPad Pro.

The Surface Pro 8 could be old news, folks: the Microsoft Surface live event is taking place on October 12, and all current leaks point towards us seeing our first glimpse of the hotly-anticipated Surface Pro 9. Still, you can read out original review of the current-gen model right here - we loved it when it came out in 2021, and we still love it today. With the Surface Pro 8, Microsoft finally took the aging design of the Surface Pro lineup and completely modernized it. This is the biggest change we’ve seen on this flagship device in years, rolling out some long-overdue design improvements like thinner bezels, rounded edges, and the inclusion of the Thunderbolt 4. The Surface Pro 8 is still very much recognizable as part of Microsoft's core line of Windows devices, a one-time candidate for our best tablets list. At the same time, it truly feels like a new generation with these design changes and some of the fastest hardware that's ever been seen in a Windows tablet. And, although we are lamenting the loss of some legacy ports, this is the best Surface Pro we’ve got in years.

As the latest in Microsoft's 2-in-1 lineup, the Microsoft Surface Pro 8 feels like a next-gen device. Its exceptional display quality makes watching videos a delight. The powerful CPU ensures you won’t experience significant slowdown when browsing the web, video chatting or performing other everyday tasks. Windows 11 also feels like it was tailor-made for the device. Gaming on the Surface 8 Pro leaves much to be desired, and the battery life doesn’t last as long as Microsoft claims. The Surface Slim Pen 2 and Surface Pro accessories pair brilliantly with the device but you have to spend additional money for them. While not perfect, the Microsoft Surface Pro 8 is a solid 2-in-1 Windows 11 tablet that's a satisfying upgrade over the Surface Pro 7.

After a few weeks of my iPad Pro sitting on a shelf, I have gone back to using it as my main device. But I'm already missing some of the features and things I could do on the Surface Pro 8 that I can't on the iPad Pro -- like hook up a webcam to live stream an event over LTE (something I actually did recently for family members that couldn't attend a funeral). So, iPad or Surface Pro 8? For me, it'll come down to what iPadOS 16 does or doesn't add to the iPad. But for everyone else, if you're on the fence about whether to go with the Surface Pro 8 or an iPad Pro, I'll say this: you can't go wrong with either device. Since its debut back in 2013, the Microsoft Surface Pro lineup has pretty much changed the way we see 2-in-1 devices. While not perfect, the original Surface Pro proved that it is possible to have a full Windows desktop experience on a compact tablet form factor. Now some 9 years later, Microsoft has refined the lineup with the release of the Surface Pro 8 - the tech giant's most powerful 2-in-1 device yet. However, at a hefty starting price of RM4950, and up to RM8750 for its most specced out variant (without the keyboard case and stylus), is the Surface Pro 8 worth it? Well, let's find out together, shall we?

The Surface Pro 8 is the device many people have been waiting years for. Microsoft has finally updated its design, with a larger display and slimmer bezels bringing it closer to a traditional laptop than ever before. While not OLED, the gorgeous screen is now a buttery-smooth 120Hz, while performance from 11th-gen Intel chips is excellent. Other highlights include a great video calling experience, solid battery life and impressive speakers. The new Signature Keyboard and Slim Pen 2 are excellent accessories for the Pro 8, but they’re also symptomatic of its main issue. In addition to a higher starting price, Microsoft expects you to pay hundreds of pounds/dollars extra for the full experience. With that in mind, you have to be extremely confident that the Surface Pro 8 can rival the best laptops available right now. If it’s not going to be your primary productivity device, it’s worth considering more affordable options.

The only major downside to Surface Pro 8 is the price. Just look at the table above. Furthermore, accessories are sold separately and easily cost a few hundred more. Prices start at S$1,649, but that unit has little memory and storage. The cheapest configuration with 16GB of memory is S$2,099 but that only has 256GB of storage. Though with cloud storage so affordable these days, I think most people can get by with that. If you want a unit with 16GB of memory and 512GB SSD, prepare to cough up S$2,859. If it’s any consolation that configuration comes with the Core i7-1185G7 processor. As tested, my system with a Core i7 processor, 16GB of memory, and 256GB of storage is S$2,399. However, the keyboard and pen is an additional S$399. This brings the complete system price to S$2,798. No matter how you look at it, the Surface Pro 8 is considerably dearer than its rivals. All in all, it seems like Microsoft has finally perfected the template for a high-end Windows detachable notebook. And really, price is really the only major thing holding me back from giving the Surface Pro 8 a hearty recommendation

As always, the main question is whether or not the Surface Pro 8 is worth the price of admission. The answer boils down to how much you will use its undeniably attractive skills; it’s easy to rip off the keyboard and use this as a tablet, and the stylus works beautifully on that deluxe screen. Or, if you just want to use it as an ultra-portable laptop, it’s perfectly capable of filling that role. Performance is strong enough to handle everything the average office-based employee will need to accomplish, although we do have our gripes. We wish the battery life was longer, especially bearing in mind its weight when used as a tablet, and come to that, we wish Windows 11 could hold a candle to iPadOS as a tablet operating system. However, if you’re a Windows-based business and want maximum flexibility from your devices, then the Surface Pro 8 performs its multiple roles better than convertible rivals. The price sticks in the craw, especially considering the brief warranty and the meaty upsell for the keyboard and stylus, but there’s no arguing with the quality.

The Surface Pro 8 strikes a nice balance between the Surface Pro X, which is sleek and light but doesn't work with a lot of apps, and the Surface Pro 7, which has a processor that's more compatible with x86 apps, but features a bulkier design. The Pro 8 has the same slim, rounded body that makes the Surface Pro X a better tablet than its predecessors, and it's more powerful than previous Surface Pros, making it a more suitable work device. You should consider its overall value before buying. You can get more powerful laptops for a few hundred bucks less, like the M1 MacBook Air or Dell XPS 13. There are also better and cheaper tablets out there, such as Apple's new M1 iPad Air, or the M1 iPad Pro from last year (though that requires a separate purchase for the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil). Still, the Surface Pro 8 proves it's possible to make a tablet that's powerful enough to work well as a laptop, while being thin and light enough to work as a tablet, without making too many sacrifices.

If you're looking for the highest-quality Windows laptop out there, you can't do much better than this. Unlike the Pro X, whose subpar performance made it difficult to recommend, the Pro 8 has excellent functionality wrapped in a stylish shell. Of course, you'll also pay a premium for that combination: there will be a lot of other laptops which are, in raw terms, better value for money. But no other device can imitate the ease with which the Surface Pro switches between self-contained tablet and a full-bodied laptop.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 8 improves on what came before it in a few big ways whilst maintaining the essence of the Surface Pro series. This is one of the best 2-in-1 laptops for those who plan to use it in each form equally, it switches between laptop and tablet without any fuss. If you don’t intend to use it much as a laptop, this is one of the most powerful tablets you can buy. It’ll be great for note-taking and drawing too. Not everything about it is perfect, the battery life could use a boost and it’s a shame there’s no MicroSD card slot. But when it comes down to it the only reasons I would say not to buy this is if you already own the Surface Pro 7 or if you’re only planning to use it as a laptop because you can get more power for your money elsewhere and the design of the keyboard means it’s not going to be quite comfortable enough to use on the go.

Ultimately, the Surface Pro 8 is an excellent improvement on the Surface Pro formula. That’s great news if you like the 2-in-1 form factor with a kickstand and detachable keyboard. If you don’t like that, I don’t think the Pro 8 does anything that will win you over. If you’ve got an older Surface Pro model and really like it, but are in the market for something newer and faster, the Pro 8 is a great choice. There are alternate 2-in-1s from other PC manufacturers that offer a similar form factor and experience, but I find they often don’t stack up to Microsoft’s Surface Pro line when it comes to features, build quality and other aspects.

The Surface Pro 8 is still very much recognizable as part of Microsoft's core line of Windows tablets. At the same time, it truly feels like a new generation with these design changes and some of the fastest hardware that's ever been seen in a Windows tablet. And, although we are lamenting the loss of some legacy ports, this is the best Surface Pro we’ve gotten in years. And, it also comes with the new Windows 11 operating system pre-installed. Unfortunately, all those much-needed improvements come with a price increase. With its price of entry at $1,099 / £999 / AU$1,649, the Surface Pro 8 is also the most expensive – a lot more than its predecessor, the Surface Pro 7, that started at $749 / £799 / AU$1,249 – and that makes it harder to sell.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 8 isn’t a huge step forward for Microsoft’s tablet line, but it’s a definite move in the right direction. The device fixes a number of niggling flaws in past Surface Pro’s designs and offers key performance upgrades thanks to the inclusion of Thunderbolt connectivity, an Intel 11th Gen CPU and 120Hz refresh rate screen. This makes it a better option for buyers that want a laptop first and tablet second, if you invest in the optional keyboard cover. But it’s desktop-focussed Windows 11 software makes it a poor choice for anyone that just wants a tablet first and foremost.

One of the biggest downfalls of the Surface Pro 7 was its battery life, lasting a paltry 3 hours and 12 minutes in the PCMark 8 battery test. We’ve since graduated to PCMark 10, but the Surface Pro 8 knocks that number out of the park with 8 hours and 15 minutes, making this a device you can totally use to work all day without needing a charger. This is probably largely due to Microsoft’s decision to adhere to the Intel Evo program and to limit the refresh rate of the display to 60Hz by default. With how portable the Surface Pro 8 is, it’s nice to know it’s not going to run out of battery within a couple of hours, as the charger can add extra bulk. The numbers are slightly less impressive with our video playback test, where the Surface Pro 8 lasts just 6 hours and 32 minutes, but that’s still a pretty nice little Netflix binge. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably realised that video conferencing is more important now than it has ever been, and having a laptop (or tablet) with a decent webcam is a godsend, as we all want to look good in our morning meetings.

The Surface Pro 8 now offers support for Thunderbolt 4, better GPU performance, a faster but hungrier Core i7 chip and big bright 13-inch screen. There are some downsides to the upgrade but not enough to not recommend the Pro 8 to anyone with older Pro models, moving away from the iPad Pro or pricing out the competition from Dell and Lenovo at the moment with the Latitude 13, 7320 and ThinkPad X12 here in the states. The Surface Pro 8 can run heavier, louder and hotter than some older models, but it also out performs most detachable in the market while also doubling as a dedicate workstation and ultra-portable do-everything device.

Microsoft's Surface line has come a long way, and nothing demonstrates that more than the new design shown off in the Surface Pro 8. A pleasing design, stylish to boot, offering incredible productivity, but there's a downside: this is very expensive, and - without spending up on accessories - you get a device that doesn't do too much.

Since the launch of the Surface Pro series, Microsoft has become more and more sophisticated, with top performance and quality, and it can be said to be a golden sign in the industry. Surface Pro 8 is as good as ever on the screen, especially after replacing the ancestral mold, it also uses a narrow bezel design, the screen display area is larger, the field of view is wider, and the overall is more refined. This new stylus is a highlight. It supports 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity and tilt detection, and there is almost no delay when writing. With a 99% sRGB color gamut screen, Surface Pro 8 is also adequate as a professional drawing tool. If you want to get a more complete experience on Microsoft Surface Pro 8, the combination of the new Surface Pro special professional keyboard and the second-generation ultra-thin stylus is indispensable, especially this pen, with it, Whether you want to write, paint or code words, Surface Pro 8 will have a wider range of application scenarios.

All of this presents a question: How well do we know the Surface Pro 8? From a hardware perspective, quite well: We can certainly see the value of the larger, superior display, and the tablet’s audio sounds great, too. Sure, the webcam appears to need a little work, but that’s a tweak it should be able to implement quickly. We’re not happy with how hastily Microsoft pushed this tablet into our hands, and our initial negative reaction is still justified. That was then, however. Microsoft’s Surface Pro 8 now offers leading-edge performance at a competitive price, plus a top-notch screen and inking experience. We think that the Surface Pro 8 is simply the best Windows tablet on the market right now.

For 2021, Microsoft has finally fulfilled the dream of Surface Pro (mostly). The latest gen Surface Pro 8 features an updated design borrowed from Surface Pro X with smaller bezels and softly rounded thin sides. The display is larger now and close to a mainstream Ultrabook size at 13”, and as ever it supports pen and touch. The updated display digitizer combined with the new MS Slim Pen 2 make for a much improved writing and drawing experience. The convertible tablet that becomes a laptop with a kickstand runs Windows 11 on Intel 11th gen Core i5 and i7 processors, now with an upgradable SSD and still soldered RAM. Thunderbolt 4 replaces legacy ports. As ever, the Type Cover keyboard and pen are sold separately. Cellular options will arrive at a later date.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 8 isn’t a quantum leap forward from its predecessors. Still, it makes enough crucial upgrades to an already excellent 2-in-1 tablet to once again put it among the top 2-in-1 laptops. The added screen size and reduced bezels make for a more modern look, while the rounded edges give it a much more tablet-friendly feel backed up by some of the new software touches in Windows 11. For creatives or prolific note-takers, the new Slim Pen 2 combined with the Type Cover gives you a built-in stylus with a tactile feel that makes for an improved inking experience. A bit more battery life would have been outstanding and the price jump may be hard for some to swallow. However, taken as a whole, the Surface Pro 8 is a solid addition to the Surface lineup and a compelling option for those looking to upgrade their laptop for the move to Windows 11.

While the Surface Pro 8 doesn't revolutionize the Pro line to its core, it does deliver the most meaningful update to the product in years. The new design is more aesthetically pleasing, along with the more concrete, practical advantage of a larger display. All-around performance is solid, at least in our Core i7 configuration, especially when you consider thermal challenges in a build this size. That said, both the starting price and the configuration-uptick options are up there, so the Pro 8 doesn't offer the absolute most bang for your buck versus a more traditional laptop with nearly the same specs. Some premium clamshell models with close-size screens, like the classic Dell XPS 13 and the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9, price out similarly. (The big price boosters, in their cases, are the options for higher-than-1080p touch screens.) But you can also find well-outfitted models with better specs for around the same price. We priced out another Intel Evo contender: the $1,799 MSI Summit Flip E13, for example, with 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD...but with a 1,920 by 1,200 touch screen.

The Surface Pro is incrementally better in its eighth generation, with a fast-refreshing screen, much-requested Thunderbolt 4 support and a return to long battery life. But it’s also more expensive than ever, with a $350 higher starting price that effectively wipes out any price advantage it once had over premium ultraportable laptops. The pricier the Surface Pro gets, the more caveats I have to append to my recommendation. The pen-on-tablet experience is lovely, but the most persuasive reason for me to recommend the Surface Pro is the 120Hz display. It truly makes a difference in everyday use. Microsoft needs to do a better job communicating the benefits to would-be buyers, though. I understand why it’s disabled out of the box (battery life, duh), but how will average users find it if they’re not in the know? And as of this writing, the 120Hz refresh rate doesn’t get a prominent mention on Microsoft’s product page. Meanwhile, as good as the typing experience and battery life are, they’re not necessarily superior to a comparably priced notebook.

Of course, the flip side of all this is that the Surface Pro isn’t cheap, even for what it offers. Models start at $1,099 — but that’s going to be $1,279 with the keyboard cover, and $1,379 with the Slim Pen 2. I also don’t expect too many people to buy that base model, which only has 128GB of storage and 8GB of RAM — my test model, which has a faster processor, twice the RAM, and 256GB storage, nets $1,879 with the keyboard and stylus, is going to be more reasonable for many workloads. You can get any number of regular clamshell laptops with its specs for a few hundred dollars less, including the MacBook Pro and the Dell XPS 13. That doesn’t make the Surface Pro 8 a bad device. It just makes it a somewhat specific device. It’s really targeting enthusiasts for the Surface Pro form factor — people who need the most performance in the thinnest and lightest chassis possible. In the past, those people haven’t quite had a device that met all of their needs. For the past two years, you’ve had to compromise on performance to get a Windows tablet that looked this cool.

We were expecting the Surface Pro 8 to be the most predictable and boring entry in Microsoft's 2021 Surface lineup, but we were pleasantly surprised. Microsoft has brought a lot of improvements that we were asking for, along with a much-needed boost to its internal components. That does come with a higher price tag, however, which will be a tough pill to swallow for some. It's going to be interesting to see it side-by-side against the iPad Pro with an M1, because that's going to be its toughest competition. Either way, though, it should still be a compelling product for artists that are more comfortable on a Windows platform.

When we talk about going hands on with the Surface Pro 8, there’s not that much to say. After all, it’s mostly a redesign, and this new design has been seen on the Surface Pro X. Other features, such as removable storage, Intel 11th-gen processors, and 4G LTE have been seen on the Surface Pro 7+. But this design finally modernizes the Intel-powered Surface Pro lineup. Seriously, if you looked at a Surface Pro 7 in a store and saw it sitting next to competing devices, you’d think that it was made in 2015. Of course, that’s because it essentially was. The dimensions haven’t changed in any meaningful way since the Surface Pro 4. This is the next generation of Surface, and it’s a lot sexier.

The Surface Pro 9 follows what the Surface Pro has been doing for some time, only really updating the internal hardware to the latest version. However, with the arrival of the Surface Pro 9 with 5G, there's new internal hardware, new skills and the promise of battery life that will last 19 hours. That means there are difficult decisions ahead, as the Surface Pro 9 with 5G potentially offers a great solution to working on the move with only a few compromises compared to the regular model.

The introduction of ARM is a significant moment for the Surface Pro, but it’s not ready for the mainstream yet. Undoubtedly the main issue is the effect on performance, with some noticeable slowdown and less than seamless running of some apps. Alongside a port selection that’s worse than the Pro 8 and that high price tag, it’s hard to recommend. However, the move to ARM isn’t without its benefits. Battery life is truly excellent, and it’s great to see 5G support. The video calling experience is also among the best you’ll find on any Windows device – even without all the new effects. But ultimately, most people will be better off with the Intel version. It’s far less exciting, but a much safer bet.

Look, I understand that nobody is buying a Qualcomm-powered device and expecting the power of a Threadripper. I don’t want to discount battery life and build quality as selling points, and I know the 5G is convenient. I am prepared for this comments section to be full of complaints that my performance issues are solvable and that people should just suck it up and use Microsoft’s software 24/7. But I am fairly confident that if you are someone who uses any of the emulated apps I mentioned even once a day, most other computers, regardless of their price will give you a better experience, whether it’s an iPad Pro or a Dell XPS or, hell, even an AMD Surface Laptop from the last generation. Windows on Arm is not ubiquitously unusable — but it is ubiquitously limited.

Whether or not the Surface Pro 9 is worth it depends on what you need out of a PC. I’d recommend the Pro 9 as a great option for someone looking for an excellent 2-in-1. The Surface Pro is still king in that category, and while the iPad Pro is arguably a better tablet, it’s a worse PC. The trade-off with the Pro 9 is it’s a mediocre tablet, but an excellent PC. That gap is getting much narrower, however. As for the Surface Pro 9 with 5G specifically, I can only recommend it if you work on the go and away from Wi-Fi often enough to warrant having built-in 5G capability (and if your wallet can take another hit from the Big Three). Outside of that, save yourself some stress and get the Intel variant. And if you don’t need the tablet features, skip the Surface Pro 9 entirely and pick a nice laptop – perhaps the Surface Laptop 5, although I need to put it through the wringer first. Finally, neither the Surface Pro 9 or the Pro 9 with 5G are “must-upgrades.” If you have an older Surface Pro that serves you fine, neither Pro 9 model offers many benefits. That said, if your Surface Pro needs an upgrade, the Pro 9 is an excellent option.

You don't review a laptop such as the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 5G (or indeed any product) in a vacuum. You have to look at it from the perspective of what came before, what else is available in the market, your experience with the product, and, in our case, our long-time association with Surface gadgets. This reviewer has been using Surface devices since Microsoft introduced them a decade ago. It's been a journey of mostly (but not always) incremental changes, many of which ensured that legacy users wouldn't be left behind. Even when Microsoft unveiled the mold-breaking Surface Pro X, it kept the OG Surface design chugging along with the Surface Pro 7. That changed with last year's Surface Pro 8, which adopted the Pro X look for the Intel platform and was Microsoft's first USB-3-free Surface Pro device.

The 5G version of Microsoft's Surface Pro 9 is a handsome hybrid tablet PC, but its custom ARM processor severely limits its performance and app compatibility. It’s far more usable than any previous ARM Surface, but that’s not worth paying a premium over the faster Intel model.

If you're still interested in the 5G Surface Pro 9, having read my complaints and frustrations, be prepared to pay dearly. It starts at $1,300 with a relatively modest 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD, while the Intel model goes for $1,000 with those same specs. And if you want a keyboard, add another $120 for the Pro Type Cover (though we’d recommend the $140 Pro Keyboard instead). Jumping up to 16GB of RAM with the 5G Pro 9 (like our review unit) will cost you $1,600 with 256GB of storage. As you go up the price range, the Intel and SQ3 models end up costing the same — but who wants to pay nearly $2,000 for an ARM-based Windows PC? Perhaps one day, Microsoft's dream of an ultra-thin, ARM-powered Surface will come true. But the company has failed at every attempt to make that happen (my condolences to anyone who bought the Surface RT). The 5G Pro 9 is an improvement, but its beauty belies its many practical issues. If you're at all interested in a new Surface, buy the Intel model and get a hotspot on the side. You'll be far happier.

Approaching this from a different angle, however, it might be worth looking at the similarly named iPad Pro, just updated for 2022. Combined with a similarly expensive add-on-keyboard, it also attempts to be both tablet and laptop at the same time. Surface Pro is the productivity side of that coin, iPad Pro is the entertainment side. These are my initial hands-on impressions for now, and the updated full review of the Surface Pro 9 with 5G will follow the completion of our benchmark testing.

More than before, you need to be careful when deciding whether the Surface Pro 9 is the right pick for you. Simply put, it’s not necessarily easy to make a universal pitch, as it was for the Pro 8. Caveats of comparing to the Intel version aside, let’s look at what’s in front of us with the Surface Pro 9 SQ3 variant. The device feels as sleek and premium as ever, with a best-in-class kickstand and keyboard. The latter is still sold separately, and the combination can’t quite match up to a laptop, but this type of configuration has its own value. How much one misses the headphone jack will vary, but it doesn’t feel like a necessary exclusion. The SQ3 version isn’t the best deal on a power and storage basis (more than 128GB for $1,299 would be nice), but it gets you excellent build quality, battery life, and useful camera features. For mobile-first users who are excited by 5G support, the SQ3 Pro 9 is an appealing package, and the nicest 2-in-1 detachable around. Consider it a viable alternative to the featherweight Dell XPS 13, a MacBook Air, or a portable Chromebook if the total package makes sense for you. To those less interested in 5G and more concerned with performance, the Intel-based Surface Pro 9 is almost definitely faster and more capable of a set-it-and-forget-it Windows experience.

We didn’t extensively test the Microsoft’s tablet for compatibility with modern applications due to time constraints, and that’s traditionally been the weakest point of the Arm argument. You can see that we struggled to get some of our benchmark applications to work, and we’re not going to award an Editor’s Choice award based upon that. But the thrust of Windows on Arm has always been the core applications, namely Microsoft 365/Office and web browsing, and how they run. All of those load and run as expected. Battery life, the other selling point, has been somewhat superseded by Intel’s Evo platform — by convincing laptop makers to build their clamshells a little thicker and with more battery, they easily extended their run time. As a tablet, the Surface Pro 9 (5G) sits within a niche, without the ravenous competition of the clamshell notebook space. That gives it breathing room. But, excuses aside, it’s now within striking distance of mainstream Core products. We don’t have the Surface Pro 9 and its Intel Core processor to test, but the Surface Laptop 5 stands in. The tablet’s battery-life argument holds up, and yes, you can argue that you can trade off a bit of lower performance for improved connectivity. So yes, the Surface Pro 9 (5G) did unexpectedly well. We’re impressed. Is it the best tablet in its class? We don’t know. But yes, we’d recommend that you consider the Surface Pro 9 (5G), and hope for continued competition from Microsoft and Qualcomm in the future.

The Surface Pro 9 is pretty much what we expected: a jump up to Intel's 12th-gen CPUs. But Microsoft surprised us with a huge shakeup for its tablet PCs. There's also a Surface Pro 9 running a custom SQ3 ARM chip, which also includes built-in 5G. Can an x86 Intel processor and a mobile ARM chip really sit side by side? We got a chance to compare the two new machines at Microsoft's hands-on event, and to be honest, we just have more questions.

Mogło by być dłużej. Np. testowany zestaw to ok. 9,1 tys.

Aktualizacja Surface’a Pro nie dorasta do mocnej w swoim segmencie cenowym konkurencji, w przypadku wersji ARM dodatkowo mając ogromne problemy z wydajnością.

Overall, it’s a bit of a mixed bag from the Surface Pro 9. While it’s perfectly capable of doing the job it’s designed to do, the hardware can’t quite match the best in the business. The Apple M2 iPad Pro is not only quicker all round, it has a better display, camera and speakers. Apple’s 2-in-1 is the gold standard for this type of device and it gets more capable year on year. It’s also more expensive than the similarly capable Samsung Galaxy Book2 Pro 360. However, not everyone gets on with using iPadOS over a more traditional desktop OS and many prefer the flexibility and portability of the detachable 2-in-1 form factor. For those folk, it’s hard to look anywhere other than the Microsoft Surface Pro 9. It’s beautifully designed and lightweight, lovely to use, performs well across the board and delivers a decent upgrade over the Surface Pro 8.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 9 comes in two guises this year. You either opt for the mobile-based ARM model or the more traditional Intel option. This is a review of the latter, so there's no complaining about sluggish emulated apps here. In our opinion, you are better off sticking with the Intel model (either an i5 or an i7) as it works oh so well. When it comes to kitting out your employees with computers, it's fair to say that 2-in-1 and detachable laptops aren't always the first to be considered. But the Surface Pro 9 is arguably the best option in that laptop category. It is certainly more appealing than the Surface Laptop 5, which could have been so much more. However, you do need to pay extra for both the detachable keyboard and the Surface Slim Pen 2 stylus.

In real world use, the less than 2lb computer is great. While reviewers cover the minutia of the Surface Pro 9, at the end of the day, it still remains the gold standard of 2-in-1’s. While there are other 2-in-1’s cropping up that offer better specs in some areas, or more appealing price differentials, the Surface Pro 9 continues to deliver one of the nicest overall convertible packages. While the new aesthetic is a relatively young design, I would hope that Microsoft improves up some of the chassis underlying tech such as reintroducing an SD card reader, upgrading the hardware and software (Windows 11) display tech for more optimized battery consumption, adding haptic feedback to its separately sold keyboard, and overhauling the camera array in both software and hardware. Until then, the Surface Pro 9 stands as the best refinement of the lineup since Microsoft jumped from the 10.6-inch chunky Pro and Pro 2 design to the thinner 12-inch Surface Pro 3. After a decade, Microsoft has gotten about as close as Intel will let them in actualizing their vision for a portable PC experience, the question that remains is what’s coming in the next 10 years?

After more than a decade, Microsoft’s Intel-based Surface Pro line is still an engineering marvel with few true challengers. A beautiful 3:2 screen, a sturdy and lightweight design, an all-day battery, and a selection of quality accessories make it a highly practical tablet with the performance to reliably replace a laptop. Minimal port selection and the lack of 5G connectivity are its biggest shortcomings; the latter requires you to get the SQ3 Surface Pro 9 and accept lower performance and cumbersome app compatibility. The Surface Pro 9’s $999 starting price puts it far out of the budget territory, especially once you add storage and RAM upgrades (much less an arguably necessary keyboard cover). Microsoft's official accessories can also be expensive, but occasional promotions can considerably knock down prices. Competition comes mainly from Dell’s XPS 13 2-in-1, but it’s not much cheaper and can’t compete with the Surface’s battery life. All told, like many Surface Pro models before it, the Intel-based Microsoft Surface Pro 9 thoroughly impresses and takes home a well-deserved Editors' Choice award among high-end Windows tablets.

The accessories are the ones that will really get to you. Prices of the Surface Pro keyboard start at S$268 and the Surface Pen is S$208. If you want both, definitely get the keyboard and pen bundle which is better value at S$428. No matter what, it’ll add to the cost of your Surface Pro 9 system considerably. The system I tested has a Core i7 processor, 16GB of memory, and 256GB of storage which is S$2,488. If you add the keyboard and pen, that goes up to S$2,916. Even if you add the keyboard alone, which I consider a must-have accessory, it’s still S$2,756. The Surface Pro has never been a cheap device, and the same is true for this latest version. If you are looking for a Windows device that is equal parts notebook and tablet, there’s no contest. The Surface Pro is the best device for this. Build quality is tip-top, the display is brilliant, performance is good, and battery life remains decent, even if it’s not quite as good as the model it replaces. Really, the only stumbling block is its price.

The ARM-based Surface Pro 9 combines superb battery life with extra webcam features and 5G, but a clear drop in performance and reduced app compatibility means the Intel version is better for most people. It doesn’t stand out on the same way, but delivers a great all-round experience.

The strongest argument for the Surface Pro is just how much it can do. It will replace a laptop, the only real downside being that the trackpad isn't quite as good as you'll get on some laptops, but it will run all the applications you'd expect a Windows machine to run. It will work as a tablet, accepting that it's then running desktop apps which might not be all as fancy as you'll get on optimised iPad apps - but you can at least have parity with a Windows desktop you might have. But it's a little chunky as a tablet. If you want something super portable, but perfectly capable in a bigger desktop setup, you can have that too - with a proper desktop OS, not a compromised mobile OS. But the Surface Pro 9 is still a jack of all trades while being the clichéd master of none: the skill that Surface Pro 9 actually masters, is versatility.

So where does that leave us? Frankly, $1,700 is not a bad deal for what this tablet brings you. It has the power to spare, and an expansive screen that is good for media consumption and work-related activities. It's very portable, and the type cover makes this machine a functional laptop. My main concerns are the battery life, the speakers, and the fact that Microsoft still, after all these years, does not include at least the keyboard in the box. That's the most unforgivable point from a philosophical standpoint. The battery is the biggest pain point from a practical standpoint. However, the ability to charge over USB-C means you don't necessarily have to carry around the Surface Pro 9's brick-on-a-string proprietary adapter. A good GAN charger and USB-C cable of sufficient length should do the job. Considering the power the tablet brings, and its ability to fit into my shoulder bag, this is the machine I'll be carrying to CES in January. I just hope I won't have to sit in a chair and work with this on my lap while I'm there.

Just like the devices that came before it, the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 is as good as it gets for tablets that transform into a laptop and vice versa because it works just as well in both forms. While it may not be the most portable tablet or the most powerful laptop, it does offer a happy medium between the two - something you don't often get elsewhere. To make the most out of everything the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 has to offer, you will definitely need to invest in the Surface Pro Signature Keyboard. Not only will it allow you to type on it as you would a regular PC, but the included stylus will also mean you get the most out of the touchscreen display as well.

Still, I would be remiss not to disclose, for any who might not be aware, that the Surface Pro — Intel- or Qualcomm-powered — is an expensive device. This test model, alongside the sapphire keyboard and pen, would come out to $1,879.98. If the Microsoft hardware and branding are largely what draw you to the Pro (and those are legitimate things to be after, to be sure), the Surface Laptop 5 will provide this same processor, same RAM, a decent color selection, and twice the storage for $179.99 less than our test model (and the base Surface Laptop 5 is $279.99 less than the cheapest Pro 9 model, also for twice the storage). If what you really want is the tablet form factor with a detachable keyboard and pen, a similarly specced 12.9-inch iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard included still comes out to over $200 cheaper than my test unit.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 9 isn't a bad or worthless machine. It's powerful enough to handle everyday computing tasks, has a decent screen for watching videos and is lightweight enough to comfortably take wherever you go. It may not redefine the 2-in-1, but if you want something that's suitable as a laptop or tablet, this machine gets the job done. With that said, it's still hard for me to recommend the Surface Pro 9 to anyone but the most die-hard fans of this series. Even if it's pricier, I'd suggest the Samsung Galaxy Book2 Pro 360 ($1,249). Not only is it more powerful, it has a gorgeous 15.6-inch AMOLED display. The Lenovo Yoga 9i Gen 7 ($1,449) is another excellent 2-in-1 well worth checking out. And of course, if you want an Apple product, the iPad Pro 2022 ($1,099) is another device I'd highly recommend.

The 2022 MS Surface Pro 9 Windows 2-in-1 tablet PC is now available in Intel and ARM (Qualcomm SQ3) versions. We look at the 12th gen Intel Core i7 model in this review. Regardless of processor, you get a 13” Pixel Sense IPS high resolution display supporting touch and pen, Wi-Fi 6E, and a connector for the Signature Type Cover. It still uses the Surface Connect for charging (though you can charge via USB-C), and Intel models have 2 Thunderbolt 4 ports (USB-C on the SQ3). As ever, all but the Core i7 models are silent and fanless. It’s available in 4 colors. We look at the Surface Pro 9 and its pen as a tool for artists too.

By now you may be wondering, "Is there anything wrong with the Surface Pro 9?" And to that, I say, "No, and yes." My quibble with the newest flagship two-in-one is that, at a time when competitors like Lenovo and Asus are redefining the PC experience, Microsoft -- the Windows maker -- is hardly trying to reinvent the wheel, building for comfort instead. That's not to say that the Surface Pro 9 is a bad product; it'll most definitely earn a spot in our year-end rankings. I'm just finding it harder and harder to justify the tablet-laptop hybrid, especially when you factor in the cost of the $279 keyboard and Slim Pen 2 bundle, and the fact that most users eyeing this particular model will probably opt for, at least, 256GB of storage. That puts the Surface Pro 9 firmly in the $1,400 territory, where Apple's M1 and M2-powered laptops dominate.

The Surface Pro 9 remains one of the best 2-in-1 laptops you can buy. The upcoming Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 may put up quite a fight, but the Surface Pro 9’s unique set of premium features and gorgeous design keep it at the top of the pack for now. And yet, there are things that I wish were different about the Surface Pro 9. Apart from the weakened battery life and lack of a headphone jack, it’s also a bit overpriced. That’s especially true if you want both the Type Cover and Surface Slim Pen 2. You’re looking at over $1,300 for a device with only 128GB of storage. Not even Apple charges that much. And as always, you really have to be sold on the premise of the 2-in-1 to make the price worth it. Laptops like the Dell XPS 13, HP Envy x360 13, and MacBook Air are a better overall value – but they can’t function as tablets like the Surface Pro 9. Nor are they quite this compact. I still think the iPad Pro takes better advantage of its form factor, providing a far more focused touch experience. That said, the Surface Pro 9 is certainly the best the Surface has ever been, especially if you need a tablet that can replace a laptop without a hiccup.

Even though I didn’t spend much time with the Microsoft Surface Pro 9, I found it a decent upgrade to last year’s model. (Our Surface Pro 9 vs. Surface Pro 8 comparison looks at the changes in greater depth.) Because the new 2-in-1 isn’t a vast overhaul, you could argue that it might be worth skipping. That was my initial thought when I first found out about the device. However, 5G connectivity and the new NPU features could make the Surface Pro 9 a worthwhile upgrade for current Surface Pro owners. It may also be what opens up the 2-in-1 to new customers looking for their first Surface Pro computer. We should have a full review of the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 for you relatively soon. At that time, we’ll see for ourselves if this new 2-in-1 is worth buying or skipping. Stay tuned for more!

Microsoft representatives admitted there may be some confusion among some shoppers, since they can easily walk out of a store with two very different computers. But it sounds like the company is willing to deal with those usability bumps, rather than splitting the Surface Pro line once again.

Microsoft calls the Surface Pro a 2-in-1. But you can’t really fit two into one without compromising somewhere. It’s less lappable than a laptop and less tablet-y than a tablet, and it costs as much as buying both. But there’s no better tablet to do office work on and no laptop quite this flexible, especially now that you don’t have to choose between decent battery life and the ability to run actual apps without stumbling. Even if you’re sold on the idea of the Surface Pro, the smart move would be to wait six months and see how Arm compatibility shakes out, especially if your work requires any sort of graphics horsepower, you like to game, or you want 5G, which isn’t available yet. You should probably do that. After a month with the Surface Pro 11, I’m not sure I can go back to a regular laptop.

Microsoft's Surface Pro 11th edition is an awesome computer for professional artists who want a high-performance machine with a brilliant display. The era of Windows on Arm laptops is finally here, and I can't wait to be a part of it. Prices for the device start at $999.99. My review unit with the 12-core Snapdragon X Elite chipset, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB SSD costs $1,699. However, it's important to note that those prices are without accessories like the Flex keyboard. They cost extra and they're not exactly cheap, with the Flex keyboard and Slim Pen combo running $449.

It may look like the old Surface Pro, but a brighter OLED screen, longer battery life and redesigned keyboard make the 11th Edition the biggest glow-up this family has had for some time. Accessories and upgrades still cost a packet, though, so only shop for what you need. But it's worth it overall: the 2024 Microsoft Surface Pro is a tour de force in the Windows laptop space.

The Paint and Photos apps are also loaded with AI-based features for creating and editing images. The options to remove background distractions and use blur effects to simulate portrait mode were useful; the styling options, which transform a photo into an alternate style (Impressionist, Anime, and so on) feel gimmicky. The real question is whether those features are powerful enough to make you switch from your current image-processing tool to one of Microsoft's built-in options. History says that's a pretty big ask. Even if you avoid the AI features completely, though, there's more than enough power in this budget PC. And as long as your apps and hardware requirements aren't exotic, you'll appreciate its cool, quiet operation.

It's taken 12 years, but Microsoft has finally made an Arm-powered Surface tablet that senior editor Devindra Hardawar doesn't want to toss out of a window. The new Surface Pro, one of the company's first Copilot+ AI PCs, is astoundingly fast and power-efficient, thanks to Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X Elite chip. It can run native Arm apps well — but even better, it can also emulate older apps without much fuss. Basically, Microsoft has finally managed to do what Apple did with its M-series MacBooks four years ago.

The Surface Pro 11 impressed me more than any of the earlier models, and if you're willing to take a little bit of risk with compatibility -- Microsoft's got a lot of software partners lined up to deliver native versions of major applications, but a promise isn't a guarantee -- and that you won't care if a potentially better performing model comes out in a month or two, I recommend it for upgraders. And because I haven't tested the lower-power Snapdragon X Plus, I can't extrapolate how the performance compares for the cheaper models. Or you can wait a few months and know for sure.

The Microsoft Surface Pro (11th Edition) is excellent in many regards, but it’s hard to recommend at this cost when other devices provide a comparable full laptop for considerably less than this $2,000 price tag. However, if you’re OK with spending that much on what is effectively a tablet running Windows 11, the Surface Pro boasts a stunning OLED panel, excellent performance metrics, long-lasting battery life, and a punchy speaker system. In many areas that matter a lot to consumers, it’s a premium device. The Lenovo Slim 7i Gen 9 is an excellent alternative for around $700 cheaper, but if the Surface Pro sounds like the 2-in-1 for you, it’s still a great device if you can stomach its price.

Here’s where I stand: the Surface Pro (2024) 11th Edition shows definite promise. Arm’s CEO didn’t tell me that half of the world’s PCs will eventually run Arm. But you know, there’s a decent case to be made that a chunk of the world’s business/productivity PCs could eventually switch from X86 to Arm. That’s what they need, after all: long battery life and moderate performance. But the Snapdragon X Elite undercuts that. Snapdragons have always been engines of weak to moderately-powered PCs, but with battery life that lasts and lasts. Now, Qualcomm is dashing to become the fastest CPU. And it’s succeeding, at least when plugged in. But on battery, under load — and especially with an unoptimized app that requires it to rev up and rev up hard — Arm’s sacrificing battery life for additional performance.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 11 has made me a believer in Windows-on-Arm, thanks to its snappy performance, excellent battery life, improved compatibility, and new AI-powered apps that will only get better with time. While some of the Surface Pro 11's quirks from previous generations remain (and new ones get introduced), from its display to its attractive design and upgraded keyboard, this detachable 2-in-1 is the first real competition the iPad Pro has ever really had, and Apple should absolutely be worried.

The 2024 Microsoft Surface Pro is a beautiful product that retains the legacy of one of the best-designed tablets ever made. The OLED display and detachable Flex Pro keyboard are genuinely exciting refinements to Microsoft's already stellar tablet design. But Microsoft has yoked the latest Surface Pro to Qualcomm's Arm-based Snapdragon hardware, and that's not a clear winner yet. Our own testing attempts show that this cake may need some more time in the oven, even if it is a big step forward for competing processor options. The CPU muscle is mostly there, but a new CPU paradigm needs a revolutionary opportunity to make this play work. The AI era of PCs may be that perfect moment, but right now, we're not dazzled.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 11 ($999 to start) is the first Windows tablet Microsoft has shipped with an OLED screen, and the first to pack Qualcomm's Snapdragon X chips inside. Those two additions make this the most exciting Surface Pro in ages, potentially offering meaningful performance improvements over older models like the Surface Pro 9 without any price increase.

The Surface Pro line has been in dire need of a shot in the arm for some time, and Microsoft may have delivered it in the Surface Pro 11. While the base model could deliver meaningful improvements over its predecessors for the same price if the Snapdragon X Plus chip is as good as advertised, I have to admit it's the OLED upgrade that has my attention. It's a small thing that could make this Windows 11 slate feel a lot more premium, especially if it can deliver vivid colors in tandem with killer battery life. We're looking forward to finding out exactly how well these tablets live up to the hype in a full review, so stay tuned!

It’s still the same looking machine, yet this could be a massive upgrade for the Surface Pro line. With huge performance promises, extended battery life and a lovely new OLED display there’s certainly a lot to get excited by here.

Microsoft's new Surface Pro, its first hybrid Copilot+ PC tablet, doesn't look much different than its predecessors. It's still a sleek and sturdy tablet with a kickstand. But the screen looks a bit more impressive, thanks to slimmer bezels, and it's potentially more useful on the go when paired with the $350 Surface Pro Flex keyboard, which lets you type wirelessly. As a Copilot+ AI PC though, its true value lies under the hood, thanks to a 45TOPS neural processing unit in Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus chips.

Podstawowy wariant nowego Surface Pro 11 został wyposażony w wyświetlacz IPS i rzekomo wolniejszy procesor Snapdragon X Plus.

Jego design utrzymuje wysoki standard, do którego firma nas przyzwyczaiła, a nowy procesor Snapdragon X wprowadza zauważalny skok w wydajności i efektywności.

The Surface Pro has always had the makings of a great business device, with all the power of a laptop, the portability of a tablet, the flexibility of a 2-in-1 convertible. What it hasn't had, though, is the internal hardware with the right mix of processing power and battery life. Now it has. The new Surface Pro is faster than many mainstream laptops, and will last significantly longer without a recharge. And while not every Windows application will run on ARM64 hardware, the list is getting shorter, and the most popular productivity and creative apps won't give you any problems. The Surface Pro 11 won't be for everyone, and it gets very expensive in its higher configurations, especially when you factor in the price of the Pro Flex keyboard. Yet it's a superb ultraportable computer, and one that feels like it's been built for what's happening in IT right now.

If you’re wavering, my advice would be to consider a regular laptop before buying the Surface Pro 11. All the alternatives I’ve mentioned in this review are cheaper – including the M3 MacBook Air – and you won’t have to purchase an extra keyboard to make them usable. However, that’s not to denigrate Microsoft’s achievement here; the Surface Pro 11 is unequivocally a fantastic laptop. As with all the recent Snapdragon machines we’ve looked at, its battery life is stunning. General performance is snappy, it will run most software without issue and it’s even a little upgradeable. It’s a fantastic alternative to the iPad Pro and it’s cheaper, too. The move to Snapdragon chips has been consolidated, nay strengthened, by the move to Snapdragon chips and this remains the best 2-in-1 detachable Windows laptop you can currently buy. If that’s what you want, go buy one.

They cost extra, and they're not exactly cheap, with the Flex keyboard and Slim Pen combo running $449.

That means that at the absolute cheapest price with just the $199.99 Surface Pro keyboard (which isn’t wireless), you’re looking at $1,649.98 for the Surface Pro (11th Edition). The base Surface Laptop, on the other hand, is $1,449.99 for the exact same specs, just in that traditional clamshell form factor. So right off the hop, unless you need the 2-in-1 form factor offered by the Surface Pro, you can save yourself at least $200 going with the Surface Laptop. The Snapdragon X chips offer tons of potential, while the Surface Pro (11th Edition) bundles it all in a familiar and versatile form factor, making for a compelling overall package that’s great for the following people:

The Paint and Photos apps are also loaded with AI-based features for creating and editing images. The options to remove background distractions and use blur effects to simulate portrait mode were useful; the styling options, which transform a photo into an alternate style (Impressionist, Anime, and so on) feel gimmicky. The real question is whether those features are powerful enough to make you switch from your current image-processing tool to one of Microsoft's built-in options. History says that's a pretty big ask. Even if you avoid the AI features completely, though, there's more than enough power in this budget PC. Plus, as long as your apps and hardware requirements aren't exotic, you'll appreciate its cool, quiet operation.

The Surface Pro 11th Edition is the fulfillment of a long journey for this line of devices. It’s always been a device that was more about what it could be than what it’s been. But now, the Surface Pro is not just the best Windows 2-in-1 ever made, it makes a compelling case for the category as a whole. If this doesn’t inspire a larger movement in the ecosystem, nothing will. The only real downside is the price. The $999 base configuration sounds great, but you’ll need to add on the $140 keyboard at the very least. Most people may even opt for the $280 add-on that includes both the keyboard and Surface Slim Pen. That being said, Microsoft says it sells them separately to allow people to reuse older Type Cover keyboards.

The Microsoft Surface Pro has always been a hit among a certain subset of dedicated 2-in-1 users, but this latest device holds more promise than I was expecting. Its style, robustness, versatility, and brand new high-efficiency chip make this the strongest challenger to the iPad Pro I've ever seen.

Microsoft:
